Poets House, 10 River Terrace, New York City, NY
The President first reported on membership matters. There are 129 members of the Association from 26 countries (down slightly from 132 – 24 countries – at the last GA).
Since the London conference in 2013, two volumes of the WMA book series, "Word and Music Studies", have appeared: Volume 13, which contains papers from the 2011 Santa Fé conference, co-edited by Lawrence Kramer, who was thanked for his work, and Walter Bernhart; and Volume 14, which contains papers by Walter Bernhart, edited by Werner Wolf, who was also thanked for his work.
The President discussed the change of publisher, with Rodopi being absorbed by Brill (at Leiden, The Netherlands). As a result there will be some delays in bringing out the next three volumes, due to changes in format. The President will negotiate these matters with Brill.
The President also provided an update on the website, which will now be relaunched from the Centre for Intermediality Studies in Graz (CIMIG). Old material has been transferred to the new site, and the up-dated version should be relaunched later in the autumn. A member asked whether the papers now published by Brill will also be available as e-books [in electronic format], and was told that they will be so available.
The President finally extended the thanks of the Association to the host, Lawrence Kramer, for organizing a very successful conference, and Fordham University for offering a perfectly congenial venue.
The Treasurer’s Report for 2013-2015 was given by Werner Wolf. He distributed copies of the summary of expenses and noted that the New York conference involved some last-minute expenses not noted there; the current balance is approximately 8,600 Euros. The two Auditors reported that the 2013-2015 report was in good order. The Assembly voted to accept the Treasurer’s Report.
The Treasurer also mentioned that, due to the change of publisher, costs for publishing WMS are likely to go moderately up, and suggested that membership fees should rise (see below).
The WMAF Report was given by Emily Petermann. She reported on the successful WMAF conference in Aarhus, Denmark, on the theme "New Methodologies in Word and Music Studies" held in November 2014. The next WMAF conference is scheduled for December 2016, on the theme "Sexuality in Words and Music", to be held at Arizona State University in Tempe. She also noted that beginning in the current two-year cycle, two liaisons are intended between the WMA and WMAF respectively, of which she is prepared to serve for WMAF on the WMA Board. She also noted that this will involve a consolidation of the WMAF Board, with elections and a constitution in place by December 2016. It was further noted that the WMAF website is being run by Charity McAdams in Arizona, and that there is a WMAF Facebook page.
The President and the Treasurer raised the point that membership fees have remained unchanged for 18 years, i. e., 40 Euros (regular members)/35 Euros (students and retired members). It was proposed that, in case of need, the fees could be raised to 50 Euros (regular members)/44 Euros (students and retired members) for 2016-2017, and that at the next WMA conference a vote should be taken as to whether to stick to this increase (if it is needed) or to raise the fees further. The motion was approved by the GA.
The Treasurer raised the question of members who have not paid their membership fees for two or more years, and whether they should be struck off. The President noted that the Board had already been authorized to handle these situations, and the GA agreed to let the Board so deal with them.
Following WMA practice, the President announced that Lawrence Kramer is now an Honorary Member in recognition of his special service to the Association as the organizer of a conference.
The following slate was presented for the
The President announced the three forthcoming volumes in WMS:
Volume 15 will contain the papers from the 2013 London conference (edited by Werner Wolf and Walter Bernhart), which will appear early in 2016.
Volume 16 will contain papers from the New York conference, edited by Walter Bernhart and David Francis Urrows. A call for papers (on the specific conference theme) will be sent out with a deadline of 1 November 2015 for consideration for inclusion. A call for papers (shorter papers on general subjects) will also be sent out soon, for possible publication in the Newsletter on the new website.
Volume 17 will contain articles by Lawrence Kramer, entitled Song Acts: Essays on Music and Text, edited by Walter Bernhart and Richard Leppert.
The next conference of the WMA will take place in June 2017 in Graz, Austria, to commemorate the first WMA conference, held there twenty years before. The conference topic will be "Arts of Incompletion: Fragments, Drafts, Revisions in Literature and Music".
There being no other business, the meeting was closed at 12:57 p.m.
